Idaho State Association of County Coroners Meets for 2024 Midwinter Conference

The Idaho State Association of County Coroners (ISACC) met at the Riverside Hotel in Boise, Idaho, for their 2024 Midwinter Conference February 1-2.

The first day of the conference kicked off with welcome and introductions from Pamela Garlock, ISACC President and Boise County Coroner. Attendees then received training from subject matter experts on psychological autopsies, human versus animal bone identification, documenting and defending results and conclusions, and an introduction to Idaho violent death reporting system data.

Presenters included Brett Harding, Chief Deputy Coroner, Ada County; Sara Getz, Forensic Anthropologist, Oklahoma Chief Medical Examiner Officer; Ryan Gausman, D-ABMDI; and Emily M. LaFrance, PhD, Principal Research Analyst & Program Manager at IdVDRS, Bureau of Vital Records & Health Statistics.

The day concluded with a roundtable discussion on education and training and then a hosted social hour sponsored by A.D. Valor Technical Cleaning, who also exhibited.

The second day of the event provided additional training on the medicolegal approach to drug toxicity-related death from Dr. Jim Caruso, Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner at City of Denver; Erin Worrell, Chief of Investigations at City of Denver; Dr. Michelle Rippy, Director of Forensic Science Research Center; and Nikki Cooley, Program Manager at State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS).

 “ISACC conferences are vital to keeping our communities safe, as they provide critical training and put us at the cutting edge of forensic science,” said Brett Harding, Ada County Chief Deputy Coroner. “People may not realize that county coroners and their staff are responsible for continuing their education and training, so these workshops from industry experts are invaluable.”
