House Bill 556 passed the House floor today, representing a huge first win for counties. It was a strong 59-10-1 vote in favor of the bill. IAC extends a special thank you to the many county officials who took action in educating their House Members and encouraging their support. Getting this legislation passed through the House marks a pivotal first step toward correcting the funding gap for housing state inmates in county jails, and this success serves as a reminder of what can happen when IAC members mobilize on an issue. This vote brings us one step closer to reducing the cost to county taxpayers to house state-committed inmates while also allowing county sheriffs to more easily maintain county jails.
The continual advocacy from the Idaho Association of Counties (IAC) members was essential in achieving this victory. All of IAC’s members who have helped through spreading awareness and creating positive dialogue with their House Representatives were an integral part of this success. By sharing first-hand stories about the overcrowding in jails, staffing strains, and budgetary constraints, IAC’s members made this possible.
In celebration of this success, we remind our members that the work isn’t finished yet. House Bill 556 is now assigned to the Senate Judiciary & Rules Committee for a hearing and recommendation. Reach out to the members of the Senate Judiciary & Rules Committee and encourage them to vote in support of House Bill 556.
