After years of meticulous planning and hard work, the new Nez Perce County Courthouse is open for business. While in Lewiston, for the Idaho Association of County Treasurers Conference (IACT), county and state officials from across the state welcomed the opportunity to tour the new facility with two long-serving county officials, Nez Perce County Assessor Dan Anderson and Nez Perce County Clerk Patty Weeks.

The county’s vision was to create a space that not only serves the needs of the present but also preserves the rich history of Nez Perce County. The new courthouse, a harmonious blend of modernity and tradition, houses beautiful, handwritten records in leather bound books dating back to 1863. These records are accessible to the public, bridging the gap between the past and the present. It also features some of the classic, handcrafted furniture and the solid wood judges’ bar from the old courthouse, which once housed the Idaho Supreme Court.

One highlight of the tour for Disney fans was seeing a copy of Walt Disney’s marriage license. Lillian Disney grew up in Nez Perce County, and the Disneys were married in Lewiston. Another highlight was learning more about how elections work in the county. The new elections office is equipped with numerous precautions to ensure safe and secure elections in Nez Perce County.

The new Nez Perce County Courthouse represents both a respect for tradition and an investment in the future. By preserving historic features and creating modern, welcoming spaces, the courthouse offers a place where county government can continue to serve the public with transparency and care. It stands as a reminder of Nez Perce County’s past and a promise of its continued commitment to the community in the years ahead.
