Staff members from state associations across the west gathered in Salem, Oregon, August 20-22 for the annual Western States Staff Meet-Up. This year’s event was hosted by the Association of Oregon Counties (AOC), which welcomed attendees with a full itinerary that highlighted both professional development and local experiences. Highlights included tours of the Oregon State Capitol, the Marion County Jail, and the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
This year’s meet-up brought together representatives from nine associations: California State Association of Counties (CSAC), Nevada Association of Counties (NACO), New Mexico Association of Counties (NM), Association of Oregon Counties (AOC), Utah Association of Counties (UAC), Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC), Alaska Municipal League (AML), Wyoming County Commissioners Association (WCCA) and the Idaho Association of Counties (IAC).
The event officially began Thursday morning with welcome remarks from AOC Operations Director Mackenzie Farrell, followed by introductions. Throughout the meet-up, attendees participated in breakout sessions designed around their roles and interests, with discussions ranging from communications and marketing to events, programs, and services, legislative work, and office culture.
Beyond the tours and sessions, participants enjoyed connecting socially. A highlight was dinner at Ankeny Vineyard, where members gathered among stunning vineyard views. Outside of our scheduled activities, we explored downtown Salem, walking along the riverfront park, crossing the historic Union Street Railroad Bridge built in 1912, and experiencing the city’s local shops and dining.
The Idaho Association of Counties (IAC) is grateful to AOC for their hospitality and for creating such a meaningful opportunity to collaborate, strengthen professional relationships, and share resources across state associations. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year when the Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC) hosts.
