This year, the 2024 election led to significant turnover in the capitol, so there are many new faces. With so many incoming freshmen, the session started slowly as they continued to learn the ropes. So far, only seven bills have been introduced in the House and none in the Senate, but this does not mean things are not happening behind the scenes.
The IAC policy staff has been busy meeting with legislators to discuss IAC priorities and policies and to offer assistance on bills that the legislators are working towards introducing. This slow period is the perfect time to reconnect and get to know the new legislators before issues start to heat up in both chambers.
The IAC Legislative Committee met on Wednesday morning for the first time this year to receive an update on the IAC’s legislative priorities and legislative policies and discuss strategy. Several committee members attended in person and met with their legislators while they were in town.
How You Can Help
Our association’s reputation in the capitol is significantly influenced by the active engagement of our members. Your input on issues that you are passionate about or concerned with is crucial. Please reach out to your representatives on the IAC legislative committee, IAC policy staff, and your legislators. Together, we can ensure that we are all working towards the best outcomes on these issues to benefit your mutual constituents.
Please look for Legislative Alerts from IAC staff. These emails are in a distinct format to help you recognize them in your inbox. When we send out a Legislative Alert, we need all hands on deck to help us with an urgent issue, and time is of the essence. Please be sure to act by contacting your legislators when you receive these alerts.
Legislative Resources Offered
There are various resources available to help you stay informed. Next week, the IAC Bill Tracker will be up and running on our website, so you can monitor county-related bills. You can also visit the Idaho Legislature website for information regarding committee meetings, legislative contacts, the complete legislative bill list, and more.
As the session gains momentum, IAC will keep the membership apprised of bills we are working on and issues we need you to engage on. Next Friday, January 17th we will kick off our first weekly Friday IAC Live Legislative Update. Click here to register for the meetings and add them to your calendar. We encourage all of our members to attend these weekly meetings to help you stay informed about legislation that may be in the pipeline that would impact counties. It’s the perfect time to let your voice be heard, share your unique perspective with IAC members and staff, and stay apprised of what is happening here in Boise.
