There are ongoing discussions in the Legislature about cutting $50 million from the Governor’s proposed budget for state and local highway maintenance. If advanced, it would result in a loss of $21 million in local road funding through the highway distribution account. IAC is concerned that this is the first step in further general fund reductions in funding for local highway maintenance. Click here for an estimated revenue loss for your county.
Please reach out to your legislators and voice your opposition to cuts to local road funding. In your communications, please thank your legislators for the general funding that has been provided the previous three years. Let them know what projects have been funded because of state support of local roads. If you have photos of completed projects, please provide them with photos of projects completed with state funds, including a description of the project, the location of the project, and before and after photos. Additionally, please provide them with information on road maintenance projects planned for this coming year along with photos of the condition of current roads and bridges targeted for maintenance.
Time is of the essence, so please reach out to your Representatives and Senators over the weekend so they know the importance of continued general funding for state and local highways.
Additionally, for those counties that receive SRS funds, funding for SRS has not been reauthorized for this year. If it isn’t reauthorized, it will result in an additional loss of $14 million in county and highway district funding for local highway maintenance. Please let your legislators know that SRS funding is also at stake and that county budgets cannot sustain cuts to both state funding and SRS funding for county roads.
