Dear County Elected Officials,

As I described to many of you starting in 2017 when I was executive director of IAC, there was a major opportunity for counties to receive significant resources to fight the opioid epidemic simply by signing on to the litigation.  Now that a settlement has been reached, it is critical for the final step to occur.  We need all counties to sign on to the settlement agreement.  It is essential that you sign on during the month of December 2021 but prior to January 2, 2022.  If you don’t do so, you will forever lose the opportunity to access those dollars.

Since 2017, at least 18 Idaho counties and several Idaho cities have pursued litigation against “Big Pharma” for the destruction caused by the use of opioids in Idaho’s counties.  As a result of that litigation, all 44 counties, 23 Idaho cities and 7 public health districts can join in the settlement to help mitigate the consequences of opioid abuse.  That means that $72 million in real dollars will be available to Idaho locals to use for these purposes.  The state of Idaho will also receive $48 million for their participation in the settlement of our litigation.

It is not necessary that your county have a plan for how you are going to utilize the funds you will receive, only that you intend to participate in the settlement.  However, in the documents below there are suggestions and descriptions about how you can spend the dollars.  More information will be forthcoming about how you will be obligated to report their use.  Regardless, the goal is to give the counties as much flexibility as possible.

Please follow the instructions on this page to become a part of the settlement.  If you have any questions, please contact Kelli at IAC immediately.  If Kelli is not available you can email me directly at daniel@chadwickpolicy.com.

Kindest Personal Regards!
